Proud Mau George shows off his bronze medal won in the shot put on Friday afternoon, with his partner Leah Nelio.
The 23-year-old, who could be injected into today’s rugby league sevens competition, won gold in the event at last year’s Manea Games for his home island of Aitutaki.
George says he has been very excited by the shock third placing, considering that he only took up shot put at the Manea Games in October.
George, who works at the Koru Café in Ootu, says that he was aiming to beat at least three people in the nine-man event and during the competition, he kept joking with coach Teaea Parima that he was near the bottom.
His second to last throw of 13.85m was enough to get him bronze – eight centimetres ahead of fourth placing.
The eventual winner Daniel Kilama of New Caledonia threw 16.17m, just one centimetre in front of Shaka Sola from Samoa. - Moana Moeka’a: Cook Islands News
