Jone Wainiqolo took great pains to ensure that the measurements of his starting blocks were exactly as he wanted them before the start of the race.
His gold-medal time was 55.12 – apparently a little over his personal best but a whole gap ahead of the second place-getter, Heamatangi Tu’ivai of Tonga whose time was 57.33. Third was Jocelyn Muntaner of French Polynesia was not far behind Tu’ivai, in 57.64.
