What a magnificent week it has been for former Goulburn Valley Football League players who have won League medals, been named in Teams of the Year and have won flags. How stronger would our League be if these players were showing off their talents in our League? Have a look at the following :-
Rhys ARCHARD has shared the 2009 S.A.N.F.L. Magery Medal with another ex Victorian Country player James EZARD. Rhys now with North Adelaide and James who is with West Adelaide both polled 18 votes in the count held last Monday night in Adelaide. And what about former Shepparton United player Michael BARLOW who was runner-up for the J.J. LISTON Trophy as the best and fairest in the Victorian Football League. Mick, aged 22 years and in his second year with Werribee scored 16 votes, two behind the leader Myles SEWELL from the North Ballarat Roosters. Mick has also been awarded the FOTHERGILL/ROUND medal for this season as being voted the best Under 23 player in the V.F.L. and has been invited to an A.F.L. screening day so fingers crossed, Mick could be another sensational achievement and be drafted into the A.F.L. Nathan GILLILAND from Euroa has been teaching up in Brisbane for the last 20 months or so and on Monday night he was awarded the J.A. GROGAN Medal as being the Best and Fairest in the Queensland A.F.L. Nathan is a goal kicking forward with Mt Gravatt who take on Morningside for this years Q.A.F.L. Premiership to be played at Coorparoo this Sunday when Mansfield and Rochy go at it at Deakin for the right to play Kyabram in the Grand Final. And Wait! There's more ...... Micky STEVENS from the famous Waaia/Tatura/Benalla family has won the Ovens and Murray's Morris medal with Yarrawonga by polling 23 votes to win by two votes from O & M rep. player Sam CARPENTER from Corowa-Rutherglen. Down in Melbourne former Shepparton Swan and Essendon player Marc BULLEN and former Shepparton United player David GILLESPIE were team-mates in Maribrynong Park's win over Greenvale at Windy Hill last Sunday to win the A Grade Premiership in the very stong Essendon and District F.L. Former Tatura player Sam LAGOZZINO was a member of the gallant Greenvale team. And what about 36 year old Chris KENNEDY who has finally won a Premiership with Tungamah who defeated Shepparton East out at Dooklie last Saturday. Kea is a former Mulwala, Yarrawonga and Shepparton United champion and has finished off his footy the best way possible with his brother-in-law and other family members. And to top things off, former Shepparton United coach Steve HAZELMAN is leading his Tararalgon team into the West Gippsland Latrobe F.L. Premiership against Maffra this Saturday. Steve has been coaching the maroons and got them to top spot and he, along with former Belconnen and Shepp United team-mate Matt FORYS have been named in the West Gippsland Latrobe F.L. Team of the Year. Fonzy's Moe were knocked out last week in the Prelim. by Maffra.
What sort of a team could you build around ARCHARD, BARLOW, BULLEN, GILLILAND, STEVENS, GILLESPIE, LAGOZZINO, HAZELMAN, FORYS and KENNEDY? There are probably a few other former G.V. players who have had some success elsewhere this as well - we congratulate them all and wish that they can come home.
